Course description
‘The Jewish Bookshelf’: The History of the Jews through Their Books
The course will describe the various corpuses which comprised ‘The Jewish Bookshelf’. We will focus on the post-biblical literature, the literature of the Sages (Hazal), mainly the Mishna, Talmud and the Midrash, as well as the various manifestations of the Rabbinic and Halakhic literature. The importance of these sources will be discussed in the context of their usability for the student of Jewish history while introducing the special bibliographical and methodological issues and difficulties of each ‘bookshelf’. The students will be also introduced to main bibliographical tools and will train in how to use them.
