Poetry and Drama in the Hellenistic Period
This seminar will introduce students to one of the most significant and fascinating periods in ancient Greek history. Students will be acquainted with developments and changes that occurred in Greek poetry and its genres, will read a selection of poems by various poets and in various genres and also of the comedy of Menander, and will examine them against the background of the political, social and cultural changes of the period. The subject of the contribution of Hellenistic to Roman poetry and comedy and, through it, to western poetry will also be addressed.
Course requirements: advanced Greek, full and active participation and a seminar paper.
