Course description

The Greek and Roman Drama

This course is dedicated to one of the most important and influential genres of ancient Greece and Rome. We will review the history and development of Greek and Roman theater, examine the structure and production process, explore the various types of Greek and Roman drama and their unique feature, and read from the plays of the greatest Greek and Roman playwrights; Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus, Terence, and Seneca. We will also trace the influence and reception of ancient drama in modern times.

No previous knowledge required. Students’ duties: full attendance, reading assignments and active participation; final examination.
