Course description
Ancient Egyptian tombs offer a great deal of information about social frameworks and processes. Conversely, the "burial industry" was an important sector of Egyptian society : for instance, building the pyramids was one of the key factors in the development of the centralised Egyptian state of the Old Kingdom, and similarly, the large-scale mummification of sacred animals was an important expression of the Egyptians' national identity under foreign rule in the later 1st millennium BCE. This course will make a chronological survey of ancient Egyptian burial architecture, equipment and practices, stressing the social aspects of this material.
