Religion was a key element in Ancient Egyptian culture. It explained the nature of the
universe, kept the world in existence, and could be invoked in personal crises and at points of
transition. This course will survey the major myths, gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt, and
religious activities of all kinds. Course participants will learn about the structure and
symbolism of Egyptian temples and chapels, daily cult in temples, religious festivals and
informal worship at different periods. It will also survey ancient Egyptian magic, its equipment
and methods, and its use in medicine and protective rituals by experts and ordinary people.
Course participants will familiarize themselves with major primary sources (texts, objects,
buildings, etc.) and will improve their ability to analyse and understand them, whilst acquiring
the necessary background to understand the material, and suitable analytical tools.
