Course description
The Period of the Iron I serves as fascinating "lab" for debating the possible relations between material culture and identity. The Iron I was a period of political, economical and cultural transformation that took place following the dissolution of the old world system and prior to the growth of the new kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
During the course we will discuss the nature of the Iron Period: How can we use material culture to disclose ethnic identity? What was the fate of the urban-Canaanite culture? What lays behind the term 'Philistine immigration'? who were the 'Early Israelites'? and what brought about the rise of local kingdoms?
The discussion over the Iron I period will enable us to develop and deepen academic skills such as developing research questions, academic reading, writing and presentation.
