Course description
The course introduces the pre-classical cultures of the Aegean - the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures. Memories about these cultures survived in Greek mythology and in Homeric Iliad and Odyssey, yet it is archaeology that discovered the reality behind the myths. In light of archaeological finds from Crete and Greece we shall discuss the emergence of Minoan 'palaces' and unique society, art and religion; the cultural influence of the Minoans on the Aegean region; the Thera volcanic eruption and its impact on Minoan Crete; the emergence of Mycenaean culture and its spread over the Aegean; Mycenaean citadels, chiefly tombs and administration; the collapse of Mycenaean culture.
