Course description
Introductory course to the religion and mythology of the ancient Near East. Reading will include the chief mythological compositions (in translation) of the ancient Near East. The course topics are: From monotheism to polytheism; what is religion? what is polytheistic religion? what is ancient Near Eastern religion? The sources for the study of ancient Near Eastern religion. What is myth? What is ancient Near Eastern myth? The great goddess in the ancient Near East. The great goddesses. The beginning of pantheons. Creation myths (cosmos; man), fertility, growth, love and death.
