Course description

The Anti-Establishment work - in poetry, prose and other artistic fields - is one of the main characteristics of French culture, from Francois Villon in the late Middle Ages to the present. "Anti-establishment" is a general term for various forms of artistic rebellion against social conventions - against the values of the Church and the Monarchy in the days of the Ancien Régime, against the values of the conservative bourgeoisie and the "sanctities of the nation" in later periods, and even against the widespread uses of the language itself. The course will examine various aspects of the French culture, from the 15th century (Francois Villon) and the 16th (The Libertins), through the works of the "cursed poets" in the 19th century, until the end of the 20th Century.
