Course description
Culture is based on human interaction. Works of art, ideas, technologies or games – these and other cultural products are not just formed by people, but are also consumed, referred to, preserved and distributed by people. To be meaningful and cast impact overtime, works of art and other cultural products must therefore fit the perceptual, cognitive and emotional mechanisms of their creators and of their audience. It is this audience who responds to it, mediates it and transmits it further. The cognitive study of culture wishes to understand culture by looking into the cognitive processes involved in cultural and artistic exchanges.
This course presents the cognitive approach to culture, demonstrates how various forms of art and culture communicate with their audience and offers a novel understanding of the way culture develops.
