Course description

In the seminar we will read and discuss the work of Vilem Flusser with emphasis on his philosophy of technology. Flusser, who is considered one of the most original and influential philosophers of photography and media in the second half of the twentieth century, escaped Czechoslovakia with the German invasion in 1939 and found refuge in Brazil. In order to explore his philosophy of technology we will read in his most famous book, Towards a Philosophy of Photography, and try to establish relationships between this book and other publications of his such as on the ‘apparatus’ as well as the relationship between his conception of technology and some of his earlier, philosophical publications.
