Course Description:
The course deals with experimental aspects of phonetics, phonology and morphophonology. Practical and theoretical considerations in conducting experiments are discussed. We investigate the contribution of experiments to the understanding of phonetics and phonological systems. Students completing the course in its entirety will have the foundations needed for conducting experiments.
We begin with an introduction to the field (I on reading list). We follow with a discussion of methodology (II). The subsequent sections discuss various kinds of experiment (III, IV, V), and the kinds of phenomena dealt with (VI). Time permitting, we will discuss the use and validity of experiments during acquisition (VII).
Students will conduct two experiments as a requirement for this course (mid-term, final).

Course Requirements:
• Phonetics and Advanced Phonology (Acoustic Phonetics is advisable, AdvPhon can be taken simultaneously)
• Attendance (bring handouts and papers to class) – students failing to attend 80% of the classes cannot complete the course
• Reading
• Keeping up-to-date with assignments and information on course website
• Mid-term experiment
• Final paper

Grade:
• Mid-term paper – 40%
• Final paper: 60%
• Note: Any assignment/paper submitted after the due date (regardless of the reason) will have 10% deducted.

Timetable (subject to change):
1. First lecture: 16.10.2013
2. Mid-term due: 12.12.2013 (PDF or DOC, via email, by 23:59)
3. Last lecture: 15.1.2014
4. Final paper due: 15.2.2014 (PDF or DOC, via email, by 23:59)

Mid-term: We will discuss the format during the semester.

Final paper: An experiment of your choice.
It is recommended that you write the drafts and the final paper in English. Your grade will not be affected by your language choice.
