Course description
Even as the monster fascinates and terrifies it mostly raises questions. From Antiquity on, it was seen as a sign and was given meanings sometimes sacred, sometimes satanic. This course will deal with the different theories explaining monsters and their role, how they issued from the pagan world, the religious Christian texts and from the proto-scientific domain. In parallel, we shall analyze a large number of works taken from literature, sculpture, painting from the Middle Ages until the 17th century. We’ll analyze the monster as a significant expression of the imagination and will try to understand its role through changing social and historical realities.
