Course description
In contrast to the perception that Middle Eastern societies are both patriarchal and traditional, the young generation of these societies has in fact neither been as passive nor as submissive as is generally assumed. These young people have challenged the political establishment in their countries as well as the religious and the economic systems. They have presented an agenda in line with their needs and aspirations. However, they only became successful in this during the present "Arab Spring," as they initiated revolutions through social networks, mass demonstrations and public outcry, which even resulted in the ousting of autocratic rulers.
The seminar will discuss the socio-political history of youth in Middle Eastern and North African societies from the colonial era up to the present "Arab Spring" and will
examine the young generations that have come to be known as effendia, new effendia and the "facebook generation".
