Course description
Controversies in the Historiography of the Modern Middle East
The course will discuss some of the major historiographical debates on the modern Middle East in order to confront opposing research approaches, methodological and ideological vantage points of different scholars, different types of historical explanations, and developments in Middle Eastern scholarship. The course will survey, inter alia, the following controversies: the critique of Orientalism, the roots of the Middle East economic backwardness, the origins of the Cold War; the "New Historians" controversy in Israel, the roots of the 1967 war, origins of the 1979 Revolution in Iran and the definitions of radical Islamism.
