Short Course Description

The course will focus on the important aspects of Muslim religion, their main principles and their development. It is arranged by subjects rather than by chronology, and the following subjects will be discussed: Pre-Islamic Arab society, Muhammad and the beginning of Prophecy, the Qur'an, the Hadith, Muslim law (the Shari'a), the fundamentals of Muslim rituals, the attitude of Islam to other religions, Muslim theology, mysticism, Shi'ite Islam, other sects (Isma'ilis, Nusayris, Ahmadis). These subjects will be presented from both the traditional Muslim perspective and the modern, scholarly one, while pointing to agreement and disagreement between the two views.
