The class will the survey the history of the United States from the initial contact between Europeans and Native Americans to the outbreak of the Civil War. We will consider America in all of its complexity, as a country offering great opportunity for some while condemning others to oppression, enslavement, and death. We will be covering conquest, slavery, capitalism, gender, religion, republicanism, and social activism.
