Course description
On March 15, 44 BCE Julius Caesar was stabbed to death by fellow senators at the foot of the statue of his great rival, Pompeius Magnus. The course will survey the extraordinary career of the man, who changed the course of both Roman and European history. We will focus on his early life, political and military career, his dilemmas and try to understand the motives that drove this unusual individual, who brought about the downfall of the Republic which endured some five hundred years. We will also discuss his "after-life" in western culture.
