Course description
The seminar will deal with the relationship between suffering and knowledge. In the first part of the seminar we will discuss the phenomenology of suffering (physical as well as psychological), the distinct way in which we experience ourselves as suffering and the unique form of self-knowledge that we can possibly gain from the experience of suffering. The seminar's second part, will focus on our experience the suffering of others and explore whether we can know another' (human or animal) suffering or pain, what is the validity of such knowledge and what are its moral implications.
