A survey of key philosophical debates in the history of aesthetics concerning the place of beauty and art in human existence. Themes include:
1. The Birth of Modern Aesthetics (Baumgarten, Reflections on Poetry)
2. The Greeks, Art and Mimesis (Plato, Republic)
3. Beauty, Desire and Time (Plato, Symposium)
4. Representation, Illusion and Perspective in Early Modern philosophy and Renaissance art (Descartes, Alberti, Gormbrich).
5. Aesthetic Judgment (Kant, The Critique of Judgment)
6. The Aesthetic Life (Nietzsche)
7. Art and Psychoanalysis (Freud)
8. Modernity and Avant-Guard (Benjamin, Baudrillard)
