Course description

Martin Buber’s Paths in Utopia encompasses his utopian socialism, and in particular, his views on Zionism. A close reading of Paths in Utopia and I and Thou in the course of the seminar we will familiarize us with Buber’s blend of 19th century utopian socialism and his philosophy of dialogue. Fundamental research questions in this seminar are: Is there any latitude in the 21st century for utopian socialism or an alternatives to it in our day? Can Buber’s dialogical philosophy serve only as a source of inspiration in the life of individuals or might it contribute to the improvement of society as a whole? What could Buber’s dialogical philosophy contribute to contemporary Judaism and Zionism?
