Course description

MA Course in biblical studies designed for Bible students and for students of other departments, aiming to familiarize them with the legal system in ancient Israel. What were the characteristics of the legal system? How did the judicial proceeding look like? Were there different kinds of judicial proceedings? And is it possible to answer these questions and other questions relying on biblical laws and narratives which describe judicial proceedings? The course also deals with the relations between the legal conceptions reflected in biblical literature and the real life judicature in the biblical society. The texts to be discussed in detail include the “juridical dialogue” in the story of the Garden of Eden (Gen 3:9–19); the legal “Rib” between Jacob and Laban (Gen 31); the Sotah law (Num 5:11–31); the laws of the legal system (Deut 16–17); the judgment of Solomon (1 Kgs 3:16–28); the trial of Jeremiah (Jer 26).  The course is open to BA students with special permission.  Final assignment: Final exam.
