Course description
This seminar explores the history of gender and sexuality in Modern Europe from the 18th century to the present. We will examine the important contribution of gender studies, studies of the history of sexuality, and queer history and theory to the understanding and rewriting of modern history. Topics will include: modern revolutions and the promise of gender equality; the medicalization of homosexuality; the development of modern feminism; sex and city life; industrialization, consumption and gender; modern science and sexual minorities; men, women and total wars; the development of parent-child relations; men and women under authoritarian regimes; gender and the welfare state; the 1960s and the sexual revolution; gender and postmodern queer theory.
