Course description
Most gender studies now days focus on questions related to women’s lives and the construction of feminine subjectivity. The point of departure of this course is that one cannot explore the gendered aspects of our social life without understanding the social forces that shape masculinity. The purpose of the course is to familiarize students with recent, interdisciplinary, theoretical and empirical studies exploring contemporary masculinity. Among the issues that will be addressed in the course are: hegemonic masculinity, post- feminist masculinity, masculinity and the law and Israeli masculinity. We will also discuss masculinity as a structure, a discourse, a cultural script, an institution, a praxis and an identity. As an advanced course it will include in-class discussions drawing on theoretical and empirical texts. Students will be required to write five short papers aimed at developing critical gender perspectives and applying them on the study of masculinity. These papers will contribute to our in-class discussions and will determine the final grade of the course.
