Course description
Born digital: Children and childhood in the digital age
Marc Prensky coined the term digital natives in 2001 focusing on young people born after 1980 when social technologies such as Usenet and Bulletin Boards came online. The term refers to young people growing up in a digital environment of social network sites, blogs, computer games and virtual worlds. Therefore, they perceive the digital world as integral part of their daily lives and speak the digital language fluently. The seminar focuses on digital natives in the age of 0-13 but is also going to refer to older ones. The seminar has three main goals. First, we are going to examine the characteristics of digital media that young people consume, how they consume them and how consuming these media impacts the emotional and social development of young people in older ages. Then we are going to explore how digital technologies impact young people's perceptions of identity, privacy, piracy and learning. Finally, we are going to compare how young people perceive these aspects and how their parents perceive them.
