This course is an introduction to the field of polymer science and engineering, providing an overview of the synthesis and structure of these materials; the crystalline and glassy states; solution properties and phase behavior; mechanical and rheological properties; additives to polymers. Students will become familiar with principle of polymerization, processing methods, commercial polymers and their industrial uses, and design factors to create materials with desirable end-uses properties. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the uniqueness of polymeric materials and not on complex math formulations.
