Course description

Lecturer: Dr. Brian Rosen

Credits: 3

Prerequisite: Basic course in Chemistry and Calculus

Basic quantities in electrochemistry, types of electrodes and cell configurations, reference electrodes, fundamentals of electrode kinetics, overpotential, charge transfer and mass transport controlled processes. Basic techniques in electrochemistry: potentiostatic, galvanostatic, cyclic voltammetry, rotating-disc electrode, anodic stripping, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Modeling diffusion and forced convection at rotating disc electrodes, direct current electroplating, electrocatalysis. Fundamental operation of various batteries, fuel cells.

At the end of this class, students should be able to confidently read and understand papers in electrochemistry journals and apply these concepts to their own research.
