Prerequisites: Basic course in chemistry
Economics of corrosion. Thermodynamics and kinetics of electrode reactions. Corrosion testing (e.g., polarization methods, cyclic potentiodynamic scans, electrochemical noise measurements, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy). Forms of corrosion (e.g., uniform, galvanic, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen damage, corrosion fatigue, pitting, crevice, erosion-corrosion, oxidation at elevated temperatures). Material degradation problems in different environments – marine, oil and gas production, microelectronics, energy conversion and generation systems, concrete, jet engines, biomaterials and medical devices. Corrosion control – material selection, water chemistry and inhibitors, coatings, anodic and cathodic protection, design considerations.
