Course description
Credit points: 1
Prerequirements: Introduction to Materials Science & Engineering
1. The tension test (carbon and reiforced steel, brass, duraluminium, polymers,
ceramics).
2. The hardness tests (including variously heat-treated steels).
3. The impact test (variously heat-treated steels; building the transition temperature
curve for soft steels).
4. Flow-lines observation (in cold-worked and forged steels).
5. Crack finding (by visual examination and ultrasonic methods).
6. Heat-treatments in steels (slow heating, quenching, stress relief in water, oil & air-
steels, Grosman & Jominy tests).
7. Carburization of soft steel in a molten salt bath).
8. Optical metallography:
a. specimen preparation.
b. the use of optical microscope in reflection.
c. examination and identification of steel microstructures (after various
heat-treatments), cast iron, copper, zinc, duraluminium.
d. inspection of cast and weld microstructures.
9. Heat-treatments of light alloys: aging of aluminium alloys and anneal of copper
alloys.
