Course description
This course is an introduction to modern field of nonlinear materials. It consists of two main parts.

A. Theoretical background of a basic knowledge in physics of nonlineaer dielectrics, ferroelectricity, piezoelectric and electrostrictive effects, linear (Pockels) and quadratic (Kerr) electrooptic effects, nonlinear optical effects and pyroelectric phenomenon including crystallography, symmetry aspect, theory of phase transitions and ferroelectric domains. Detail description of physics of dielectrics is combined with consideration of solid state physics of the using materials.
B. Applications of nonlinear materials is considered in the second part of Course. The unique properties of ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics such as pyroelectric, piezoelectric, electrooptic and nonlinear optical effects allow their wide using in optics and electronics. New ferroelectric computer memory, positioners in various analytic tools with nanometer resolution, electrooptic devices for optical communication technology, micromotors, acoustic and thermal imaging devices are presented.
The course is prepared in Power Pont format for delivering using computer and it represents course "on line" using Internet and contains last scientific and technological achievements. The materials presented in the course are based on the fundamental knowledge and recently published scientific papers taking from Internet Journals on Line, computer illustrations are combined with graphs, drawings and computer movies extracted from various Internet Websites demonstrated by leading laboratories and industrial companies in the field.
