Introduction: Motivation (Sonar); Qualitative overview of underwater acoustic propagation phenomena.
Conservation equations in an inviscid fluid; Linear wave equation for weak disturbances; Helmholtz equation; Green's function in a uniform medium.
Ray methods: Eikonal and Transport equations; Caustics; Medium discontinuities.
Normal modes for treating propagation in layered media.
The parabolic approximation; Intensity equations.
Gaussian beam summation.
Noise; Detection and signal processing.
