Course description
An introductory Epidemiology course designed for masters level Geography students. A limited number of bachelor level graduated of the Medical Geography course ((Course # 0691247701) are allowed to register on an available place basis; medical students are encouraged to join.
The course introduces students to the uses of geography in epidemiological research and aims to prepare practitioners from geography and epidemiology to work together. To these ends the course presents a systematic review of the main concepts, approaches, tools and methods of epidemiology.
The course uses models of modern chronic disease to train in epidemiological analysis. Cancer, CHD, environmental agents such as asbestos, fluoride, tobacco and radiation are discussed in detail; autism and mental health are reviewed as well.
Main topics include: Definitions of incidence and prevalence; risk measures and measurement; epidemiological models; screening principles and yield, ROC, etc.

Extensive PowerPoint presentations sent to all participants every week ahead of time.
Prerequisite:
There are no prerequisites for Masters level students. Bachelor students are admitted only upon graduation of the Medical Geography course with an 85 grade or better.
Grading:
Regular attendance is a stated default requirement in this medically oriented course; and is adhered to without enforcing.
The grade is based on a Final Exam (100%)
Masters students may submit a seminar final paper instead of an exam. A final paper must adhere to specific outline requirements.
