Course description

Stellar properties derived from observations; the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram; the equations of stellar evolution; physics of gas and radiation in stellar interiors; stellar nucleosynthesis; stellar models: polytropes, the Chandrasekhar mass, the Eddington luminosity; the conditions for hydrostatic and secular stability; the evolution of stars: main-sequence,  red giant branch, planetary nebula stage, asymptotic giant branch; last stages of evolution: white dwarfs, supernovae; the stellar life cycle; interacting binary stars and cataclysmic phenomena; star formation in galaxies; cosmological phenomena.
