Course description

The course is intended to provide graduate students with an introduction to the basic concepts of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics.

The main topics of the course are listed below.

Introduction to symmetries in QM and particle physics
Lie groups and representation theory
Young tableux
Types of symmetries: spacetime and internal, global and local, continuous
and discrete, exact and broken
Symmetry breaking: explicit, spontaneous and through anomaly
Quark Model, Gell-Mann Okubo and predictions from broken symmetries
Abelian and nonabelian gauge symmetries
Leptons and SU(2)_L x U(1)
Higgs mechanism
Quarks under SU(2)_L x U(1): flavor mixing, KM matrix, CP
Parton model and scaling
Brief introduction to Quantum Chromodynamics:
SU(3)_c, asymptotic freedom and confinement, structure functions
in deep inelastic scattering, evolution equations, jets
Lattice gauge theory
