Course description
Thermodynamics: Postulates, entropy, Legendre transforms, thermodynamic potentials, Maxwell relations, minimax principles. Basics of classical statistical mechanics: properties phase space, density function, Shannon entropy, maximum entropy principles, ensembles. Boltzmann equation and H-theorem. Basics of of quantum statistical mechanics: extension of classical principles to quantum mechanics, density matrix. Ideal gas (classical, Bose-Einstein,  Fermi-Dirac). Phonons and photons. Interacting systems: exactly solvable models, variational methods, perturbative methods, series expansions.  Phase transitions of first and second order, phase diagrams, Maxwell construction,  approximate treatments, mean field theory. Landau theory, scaling, critical indices, universality. Renormalization group.
