Course description
Bravais lattice, reciprocal lattice; Bragg scattering and von Laue condition; cohesion energy. Vibrations in a lattice: Dulong-Petit law, normal modes in 1D and 3D, the elasticity tensor; heat capacity - Debye and Einstein models, Debye-Waller factor, stability of lattices; Mermin-Wagner theorem. Electrons in a lattice: Drude and Sommerfeld models, interacting electron gas; Bloch theorem, tight-binding and nearly free electrons; semi-classical dynamics, conductivity, Bloch-Zener oscillations, Hall effect, de-Haas van-Alphen effect.
