Course description

Introduction to Thermodynamics and the States of Matter

Introduction to continuum machanics, macroscopic description of matter, phase diagrams, Introduction to the kinetic theory of gases. Laws of Thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes, The thermodynamic formalism. Equations of state, thermodynamic potentials and Maxwell's relations. Thermodynamic stability and first order phase transitions.
