In this course, we will explore the transformations the medium of opera has undergone in recent decades. We will discuss how opera is understood today, how it is listened to and what is listed to. We will also look at the relationship between the different elements comprising opera, the influence of technology and recent off shoots such as music theatre, post-opera and the like. We will read representative scholarship on these topics, and consider major examples of the 20th and 21st centuries.
