בקורס נכיר את התפתחות הסגנונות המוזיקליים, מושגי התקינות והיעדים האסתטיים של המוזיקה מיון העתיקה ועד סוף המאה החמש עשרה.

Syllabus

The course offers a survey of the evolution of musical genres and styles form 850-1550. Special emphasis will be given to the evolution of music as reflecting the broader cultural, ideational, intellectual, social and theological contexts during the period in question and will survey of the evolution of musical styles, notions of correctness, and aesthetic ideals from ancient Greece to the 15^th century.

.Requirements:

Attendance and active participation in class, written assignments, weekly reading, examination.

Course topics:

Ancient music.

Gregorian Chants.

New Frankish religious music.

The evolution of polyphonic music.

The school of Notre Dame.

The Medieval Motet.

Secular monophonic music.

Secular polyphonic music.

Expected learning outcomes:

Students will learn to know medieval music, understanding the impact of oral tradition on the evolution of musical genres and style, and the evolution of musical notation as part of broader cultural transformations. Medieval music will be understood in association with contemporaneous literary, religious and scholastic traditions as well as with the sociology of the period in question.
