Solo and chamber instrumental music constitutes a big part of J.S. Bach’s compositional output consisting of the music written for organ and other keyboard instruments, violin, cello, gamba and flute. This vast and remarkably rich array of works was created by J.S. Bach in different periods of his life and career, in different social contexts and composed in different forms, genres and styles. The course will deal with a survey of J.S. Bach’s instrumental music.

Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, seminar paper (detailed information regarding specific works, procedure, requirements, assignments and reading will be given on the very first lesson and will be available on the site of the course from the very beginning of the course).

Course topics The main subjects are – individual works and collections of J.S. Bach’s instrumental music, musical forms, genres and styles in J.S. Bach’s instrumental music.

Seminar paper 80% Oral presentation 20%
Expected learning outcomes:
Students are supposed to get acquainted with J.S. Bach’s instrumental music, to demonstrate independent thinking, familiarity with works, understanding of the development, genres and styles. Students are supposed also to improve ability to express themselves both orally and in writing within the subject.
