How do Mizrahi writers of the second generation of immigrants write the identity possibilities that arise at the unique intersection of the local culture of gender-ethnicity and class? The term 'bordelands' of ​​Gloria Anzaldua offers the opening space on the borderline (between men and women, between Ashkenazim and Mizrahim, between the center and the periphery), as a fruitful category for locating the dialogue of the cultural struggle as well as the unique configuratin of the forming identity in the border region. An identity characterized by a new consciousness centered on a new and radical attitude to space.

In this course, I would like to read the works of prominent figures in Israeli culture who deal with this issue. From the literature: Matalon, Rabinyan and Castel Bloom, and in cinema: Ronit Elkabetz and Hanna Azoulay.

Students are required to participate in all the class meetings; to read all course materials as they are detailed in the syllabus; to write a final paper (a short referat or a full seminar paper).
