A guided reading of the philosophers of the digital, mainly targeting students who consider writing a thesis in the digital culture track. Each meeting is dedicated to a philosopher that shaped our ways of thinking about communication technologies and concepts such as virtual, networks, and information. From Marshall McLuhan to Friedreich Kittler, through Michael Heim, Pierre Levi, Paul Virillio, and Donna Haraway. The guided reading is annual and its second part deals with an unofficial canon of digital cultural texts. Students in the digital culture track require both parts, however, other students can take each part separately. Cohn institute students can take only one of these semesters and would still need to experience guided reading with another professor in another field of the history & philosophy of science. We meet every 2 weeks in order to allow for reading of the texts. The grade is based on participation in class and submission of a short final essay expressing a personal stance based on a connection between some of the readings. Each semester equals 1 credit.
