Contemporary Fiction

In this course we’ll examine the literary form of the short story and its longer version, the novella.

We’ll look at works by major British and American authors to question what makes the short story an enduring cultural form to this day.

We’ll explore works by American authors John Cheever, Raymond Carver, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty and Stephen King and British authors Arthur C. Clarke, Hanif Kureishi, and Angela Carter among others.

We’ll look at the ways the short story form becomes a vehicle for social exploration and critique. How do the stories encapsulate dilemmas of race, class and gender? Why have the authors chosen this form to present their view of the world?

Course requirements

Attendance: 10%

Class presentations/responses: 15%

In class midterm: 19%

Final paper: 66%
