חותמה על מיליונים באירופה ובטריטוריות הקולוניאליות שלה. המלחמה היוותה מודל של מלחמות המאה ה-20 וצומת מרכזי בהיסטוריה העולמית, עיצבה התנסויות מודרניות, והשפיעה על אופני הייצוג, הזיכרון וההנצחה שאנו מכנים 'מודרניים'. מפגשם של מיליונים עם מוות בממדים חסרי תקדים וטכנולוגיות חדשות של הרס, הביא ל/או האץ שינויים במדינה, בחברה ובכלכלה, ברקמת היחסים בין מעמדות חברתיים שונים ובין נשים וגברים. המלחמה עוררה בחינה עצמית בקרב יחידים ובקרב קבוצות, והביאה להגדרה מחדש של זהויות קולקטיביות ביחס למושג, לתופעות ולהתנסויות שאנו רואים כמודרניים .
בסמינר נבחן את ההתנסות במוות מסוג חדש בחזית, שבה התפתחו צורות חדשות של לוחמה והרס, ובעורף, על יחידים ועל קבוצות ואת ייצוגי ההתנסות הללו בתרבות. נתוודע לאוטוביוגרפיות ומכתבים של קצינים, חיילים ואחיות צבאיות; נבדוק את השפעות המלחמה על חיי היומיום – החל בדיאטה היומית בבירות המערביות וכלה בתחום יחסי העבודה והפנאי. נבחן את מערכות הקשרים בין מדינות לפרטים ואת הקשרים הנרקמים בין אומות ליחידים. חלק מהסמינר יוקדש לזיכרון המלחמה ועיצוביו עד לימינו: לפולחני המוות ובמיוחד החייל האלמוני, לצורות ופרקטיקות של אבל והנצחה, לעיצוב הזיכרון על-ידי תעמולה, במוזיאונים ובבתי קברות, ובאומנויות (ובהן הקולנוע). . בסמינר נעשה שימוש בקשת רחבה במיוחד של מקורות: אוטוביוגרפיות ועדויות שבעל-פה; מקורות 'רשמיים' של המדינה; סטטיסטיקה; עיתונות; פמפלטים וכרזות תעמולה; ספרות יפה; מוסיקה פופולארית וגבוהה; האמנויות הפלסטיות והקולנוע, מוזיאונים וגם ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים מהמלחמה.
The First World War was the first global event. A total war, it changed the lives of millions in Europe and its colonial territories. It was the paradigm of the wars of the 20th century and a crossroad in world-history, shaped modern experiences and the forms of representation and memory which we call "modern". The massive encounter with death and new technologies of destruction engendered, or speeded up, changes in states, society and the economy, in class and in gender relations, and brought on new forms of reflexivity and identity.
The seminar will examine the experience of the front and home-front and their representations in autobiographies and memoires (by officers, common soldiers and military nurses), the war's impact on daily life (from diet and eating to work and leisure), the relationship between individuals and the state as well as between individuals and the nation. We shall consider forms of commemoration and mourning shaped up by the war, and modern memory. We shall make extensive use of a variety of sources: private, public and official, literary, visual (films and photography) and material remains of the war in museums and war excavations.
