This class will deal with Jewish literature and philosophy that has not been preserved in classical Jewish sources, but became either part of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible or else was extensively quoted by the Fathers of the church. For the later it was important to show that some of their theological ideas have not been a new invention but rather pre-formulated by Jews who pre-dated Christianity. The writings of this type include novels, religious poetry and other works. The books of the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew bible) are mostly complete; the quoted rest of Jewish-Hellenistic literature is more often fragmentary, yet even so allows for a window into the world views of Jews living in the diaspora, relatively acculturated to the broader Hellenistic education and still faithful to their Jewish traditions. The texts are translated into English, most secondary literature is written in that language, too. There is no place to include the vast writings of Philo of Alexandria or the New Testament.
