An introductory course designed to BA students in biblical studies and to students of other departments, aiming to survey and give an overview of the relations between biblical texts and their cultural and literary environment, i.e., Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Assyrian, Hittite and Canaanite cultures. Using rich visual presentations, the course gives a wider cultural and historic perspective on the Bible. The course presents a wide range of cultural bonds and influences, as reflected in different genres: narrative, poetry, law, wisdom literature etc. Some of the biblical texts that will be discussed in detail are: Jacob’s dream (Gen 28:10–22); the ritual of the scapegoat (Lev 16); the laws of the goring ox (Exod 21:28–32, 35–36); the Book of Lamentations.
