The seminar walks once through the developments in stage design in late 20th century. Stage design will be discussed in its material and visual aspects as well as it will be approached with questions of conceptualization: What visual narrative is established? What kind of relation is encouraged between audience and stage? How are ideology and politics inscribed in sets and scenography? What kind of world is constructed?
In the first part the seminar introduces methodological approaches towards scenography in a perspective of cultural history. In the second part the seminar engages with the work of exemplary stage designers (and their directors) from the 1970s to the present. Starting points are Robert Wilson, The Wooster Group, Wolf Vostell/ Hansgünther Heyme, Anna Viebrock, Katie Mitchell, Julie Taymor. The seminar will engage in special with archival material from the theatre archive of the University of Cologne (TWS) and try to locate it within a broader cultural horizon.
