Sermon is one of the oldest discourse forms. In Jewish culture it is usually connected to biblical figures such as the prophets, Yotam son of Gideon and Jesus, the Talmudic sages, up to modern internet preachers. By its nature, this form of discourse, is a performance which combines ethical. social, political and philosophical ideas with all forms of folk-literature . The Jewish written Midrashim, which are based on these oral sermons, is one of the oldest expression of the Jewish textual creativity. In this course we will discuss these sermons and Midrashim from the perspective of folklore, rhetoric and literature studies, and will meet the poetical and functional developments of these genres which used to be the central form of entertainment in Jewish societies till the beginning of the twentieth century.
