Biomass Burning is a global phenomenon where by the biosphere burns either by human or natural causes.  Due to the scale of biomass burning around the planet, fires are not only obesrved and monitored from space, but are also impacting the Earth's climate.  In this course the first half of the course will be lectures by the lecturer, followed by lectures by the students on research topics chosen by them in consultation with the instructor.

The course is divided into 6 main topics:

1.  The global scale of fires, and remote sensing of fires

2. Historical records of fires using different methodologies

3. Naturally caused fires due to lighnting

4. Man-made fires

5.  Impact of aerosols and trace gases on the climate season.

6.  Modeling studies of fires and their emissions.
