Course description This course focuses on intrastate conflicts which are characterized by an ethnic rivalry. These are either conflicts between competing ethnic movements or between an occupying government and an insurgent national liberation movement. The course will generally not cover those intra-state conflicts between governments and opposition groups which are not defined by ethnic divisions. The course is divided into two parts. In its first part, we will examine the theoretical literature regarding: the sources of conflicts, the increase in nationalist demands, the outbreak of violence, the duration of conflicts and the roles of international intervention. In its second part we will examine the strategic interactions between the fighting sides: the choice between different tactics of violence, the shift between armed struggle and negotiations, and finally the causes for the success or failure of terror campaigns and different counter-terror policies. One of the most fruitful recent research avenues has been to examine how the internal dynamics within each side affect the strategic interactions between the parties. We will examine the advantages and disadvantages of this approach. While the course generally adopts the Rational Choice approach, we will draw upon other theoretical approach as well.
